A Mission Feature Boosts D30 Retention by 11%

Redecor’s My Design Journal is a highly successful feature that increased D14 retention by 11%, D30 retention by 11%, and revenue by 6% since launch according to Redecor’s internal data. The feature is a permanent series of design missions and solves two important problems for the app at two distinct parts of the player’s journey:

  • The app previously had a short FTUE that consisted of two scripted challenges before players were thrown into the app’s daily competitive challenges.
  • Players who completed the daily challenges were out of content for the day.

By adding a permanent, ongoing series of missions, My Design Journal establishes a longer and more controlled FTUE while also creating a larger pool of content that removes the app’s limit on daily engagement.

The effects of adding so much content have been dramatic: during testing, Redecor found that the number of designs submitted by players increased by 49% 2Wo2W.

We interviewed the Redecor team to understand the decisions that went into this feature, so be sure to check out the Product Insights of this month’s Headline Release.

Release Trends

During the past two years, mission features have performed fairly well and consistently, with a relatively high median revenue impact and low standard deviation. Despite their low standard deviation, mission features have a low average revenue impact compared to their median due to a small number of outliers that significantly underperformed.

Soft-Launch and Breakout Apps

Happy Match Cafe: ASMR broke into the top 20 casual apps at the beginning of September. The app offers an unconventional blend of three trending mechanics in the casual market: 3D match-3 puzzles, a custom design progression that has players decorate a cafe, and mini-games involving gross-out cosmetic procedures such as popping pimples and cleaning earwax.

Match Factory! is a 3D match-3 app that shares many of the same mechanics and features as Triple Match 3D. What sets Match Factory! apart from other 3D matching apps is its exceptional production quality, factory-themed aesthetics, and references to Peak Games’ other popular apps, Toy Blast and Toon Blast.

Innovative Feature and Event Releases

In Redecor’s Designer Status update, players win challenges within a two-week period to level up. Leveling up restarts the timer, and when the timer ends, players maintain or lose a level based on their progress.

In Project Makeover’s Autumn Inspirations, players customize and submit a photo of their avatar, then vote on other players’ photos. The photos with the most votes are featured in an in-game fashion magazine.

In Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells’ Featured Creatures, creatures with a certain characteristic are featured every few days. Using a featured creature in levels awards multiple bonuses.
