How Hypercasual Mechanics Helped Strategy Overtake RPG

Strategy surpassed RPG as core’s top genre in 2024—driven in part by leading strategy apps adopting hypercasual mechanics.

How Strategy Overtook RPG as Core’s Top Genre

In 2024, revenue among the top five strategy apps grew an average of almost 400% YoY, helping strategy overtake RPG as the top genre in the core market. Last War: Survival, the top strategy app, has spearheaded this shift, achieving 1400% YoY growth by integrating hypercasual mechanics across its playable ads, FTUE, and core gameplay loop.

In addition to Last War, other core titles like Archero 2 and Survivor.io have found success by combining action-oriented gameplay with hypercasual mechanics. The rapid growth of these apps suggests the possibility of a new generation of core apps that move away from traditional 4X and RPG structures in favor of novel hypercasual gameplay with deep progressions.
