During the base spins in House of Fun’s My Pet Dragon: Finnegan’s Fortunesplayers collect gems to upgrade dragons. Each dragon offers a unique free spin bonus that improves with upgrades. Players choose which dragon to activate, and the active dragon randomly triggers its bonus.

The second machine in the series, My Pet Dragon: Hella’s Treasures, maintains players’ progress and adds another dragon.

Add persistent progressions to boost long-term engagement.

By allowing players to keep their dragons and upgrades across multiple machines, My Pet Dragon creates long-term goals that make small wins more consequential. This permanence has the added benefit of making it easier for players to develop emotional attachments to their dragons.

Persistent progressions also provide a foundation for additional mechanics in future releases. In My Pet Dragon’s case, this could include in-machine challenges, unique symbols for each dragon, or a more expansive narrative.

As players choose which dragons to upgrade and activate, they make consequential decisions that are a key component of immersion in RPGs. This immersive experience appeals strongly to slots players who are motivated to play games in order to escape their daily lives.

Offering multiple dragons to upgrade also lets players set their own goals. According to research, goals that players set themselves lead to greater task persistence and enjoyment than goals you set for them.
